Alex Hindmarch is set to take on Music Director duties at Stingray’s boom 97.3 (CHBM-FM) Toronto, succeeding Wayne Webster, who is retiring this month after nearly five decades in radio.

Hindmarch, who additionally assumes the title of Brand & Content Lead for Classic Hits Stingray, will also continue hosting the morning show and serving as Program Director at Sudbury’s Rewind 103.9 (CHNO-FM), where he’s been since 2018. Prior to that, he spent three years holding down afternoon drive at JACK 96.9 (CJAQ-FM) Calgary, in addition to stints at 92.5 Fresh Radio (CKNG-FM) Edmonton, Hot 105.5 (CKQK-FM) Charlottetown, and Q107 (CILQ-FM) Toronto.

Webster’s last day with Stingray is Sept. 19.

“It’s a bittersweet email as we say goodbye to Wayne and welcome his replacement,” wrote boom 97.3 Program Director Troy McCallum, in an internal staff memo provided to Broadcast Dialogue. “As we mentioned before, Wayne is irreplaceable; however, we needed to find someone to fill the shoes of ‘Shoes’ and that person is someone who is a Stingray employee, has worked closely with me for the past 7+ years, lives four hours north of Toronto, hosts a morning show, has Music Master experience, and is totally pumped for the job.”

Wayne Webster was on Broadcast Dialogue – The Podcast earlier this summer taking us behind-the-scenes of his 48-year career. Listen on your favourite podcast app or here:

Stingray’s Classic Rock and Classic Hits stations will be marking the 40th anniversary of John Lennon’s death on Tuesday, Dec. 8.

Imagine: A Day for the Life will start airing at 6 a.m. local time across all 25 stations within those formats in the radio network. They’ll play nothing but John Lennon and Beatles music for the entire day, interspersed with retrospective vignettes about his life, music, impact, and influence. The programming includes stories and recollections from both music legends, as well as ordinary Canadians.

“I think many of our programmers are of the age group that was significantly impacted by John Lennon’s death,” Steve Jones, SVP, Brands & Content, Stingray, told Broadcast Dialogue. “Most of us are too young to remember his Beatle days personally, but many of us felt the pain of his passing. Knowing our listeners are in the same 45-65 year old range, we felt that they would also appreciate the chance to experience his life and legacy for the day.”

“As a 10-year old kid, I remember my teacher bringing a record player to school on December 9, and he played John’s music for us all day. That was really my gateway into music! If not for John Lennon and that teacher, I might never have ventured into broadcasting.”

Participating stations include boom 97.3 Toronto; K97 Edmonton; XL 103 Calgary; Q104 Halifax; K-Rock 97.5 St. John’s; Zed 98.9 Red Deer; K96.3 Kelowna; the nine boom network stations in rural Alberta; Rewind 103.9 Sudbury; C103 Moncton; Q88.9 Saint John; 89.3 K-Rock Kentville, NS; Z97.9 New Glasgow, NS; K-Rock 95.9 Stephenville, NL; K-Rock 98.7 Gander, NL; K-Rock 102.3 Grand Falls/Windsor, NL; and K-Rock 103.9 Corner Brook, NL.
