Both Gold and Silver winners were named this year for the first time, chosen from a record 540 entries across 18 categories. Radio-Canada Info, La Presse, The Globe and Mail, and the Investigative Journalism Bureau led wins with three apiece.

Jeff Hamilton and Katrina Clarke from the Winnipeg Free Press were awarded this year’s McGillivray Award, recognizing investigative journalism published or broadcast in 2024, for their exposé of the many cracks in Manitoba’s childcare system. Hamilton and Clarke were also recognized as winners in the Written News category.

Vancouver Sun investigative reporter Kim Bolan, La Presse organized crime reporter Daniel Renaud, and Ottawa Citizen journalist David Pugliese, who covers the military and national defence, were recognized with the Charles Bury President’s Award.

“Kim, Daniel and David have all exhibited incredible levels of courage and determination to persevere through unprecedented challenges to tell stories that matter,” said Brent Jolly, CAJ president, in a speech announcing the awards. “They are living proof that even in today’s fragmented age, journalism matters. The power of the pen to tell the truth and expose wrongdoing is an endeavour that is so vital to the proper functioning of our society.”

MTM says when anglophones look for news online, over half still turn to the websites of established broadcasters like CBC, BBC, CTV, and CNN, while nearly 20% get their online news from the website of a major daily Canadian newspaper. More than half of French-speakers say they turn to the websites of established broadcasters like Radio-Canada, TVA Nouvelles, and MétéoMédia, with three in seven mentioning newspaper websites like La Presse and the La Presse+ app.

MTM found that 87% of anglophones and 89% of francophones engage with news monthly by watching specialty news channels, reading online news articles, or watching news clips online.

Age influences preferred news sources, with older Canadians tending to watch more specialty news channel content, while younger viewers were twice as likely to use YouTube as a news platform.

MTM also looked at how newcomers to Canada are engaging with news, finding that four in five consume news monthly. Two-thirds read news online, and just over three in five watch news online. Newcomers to Canada are most likely to use smartphones to access news, followed by computers. Tablet usage for news is notably lower among newcomers compared to those born in Canada (10% vs. 20%).

The 108 news organizations securing a share of $22,193,608 in funding up until April 23, include The Globe and Mail ($2,062,409); Metroland Media ($1,953,750); Postmedia Network ($4,268,319); Black Press Group ($1,371,649); The Canadian Press ($1,355,445); Glacier Media ($397,002); Golden West Broadcasting ($289,838); Macleans ($199,814); Vista Radio ($185,394); Castanet ($155,584); The Tyee ($128,596); Investigative Journalism Foundation ($38,264); Bayshore Broadcasting ($30,482); Community Radio Fund of Canada ($26,639); and Byrnes Communications ($18,542).

Part of Google’s five-year exemption agreement that will see $100 million paid out annually to news organizations, the amounts disclosed represent 60% of the estimated total news outlets will receive, calculated according to the total number of hours paid to employees dedicated to the production of online news in 2023. Two more tranches will flow to organizations by the end of the year.

“Today we show our world-leading model in action, ensuring Big Tech compensates news media for their journalism equitably and fairly across Canada’s news ecosystem,” said Sarah Spring, Executive Director of the Canadian Journalism Collective, in a release. “It’s an historic investment that is empowering a broad range of voices, and setting new democratic precedents in media funding and transparency.”

The funds are intended to support the work of journalists producing local, regional and national news content, with a goal to ensure news businesses meaningfully reinvest the funds in their newsrooms. The CJC-CCJ says it will be conducting regular due diligence to ensure funding recipients meet their obligations and provide regular public disclosures on funding through its website.
